“’n Plekkie in die son.”
A little place in the sun.

Johann opened Môi Art Gallery in the small town of Riebeek Kasteel in 2023 and Johann began working as full time curator of the gallery in January 2024. His wife Jenny (a gifted artist in her own right), supported him in his effort to get the gallery established.

In the beginning this was no small task, as they were living in Somerset West, situated an hour’s drive away, at the time.

One may very well ask the question, “Why then open a gallery in Riebeek Kasteel, and not closer to home?”

The answer is simply that Johann discovered this beautiful little country haven, tucked away against the foot of Kasteelberg, (13 years ago at the date of writing this article), in 2011. He immediately fell in love with Riebeek, but would at the time never be able to conceptualise the idea that he would one day live there, or even own a gallery there, for that matter.

At that time Johann was deeply involved in aiding people who were struggling with personal, physiological and other issues in their lives and had been travelling the nation for 18 years, holding various conferences in doing so. It was only at the age of 52 that he discovered that he had a very special gift for sculpting with clay. After remotely working for a company based in Johannesburg, seeking a local footprint in Cape Town, and  scaling back from conferences, to have more personal and initmate sessions, Johann made the transition to become a full time curator and began developing his skill as a sculptor.

Coming back to the answer of, “Why open in Riebeek Kasteel?” We believe that after sacrificing so many years in service to others in allowing them to discover their unique and individual purpose and destiny and finding their identity and value as Divinely created individuals, we have finally been given a “little place in the sun!”. And what better place could they have hoped for it to be, than in the lovely Riebeek Kasteel?

Johann has since successfully established Môi Art as a small boutique gallery where many of South Africa’s finest artists and their art are being exhibited. Johann prides himself in the fact that the art at Môi is unique and not to be seen in most other galleries. The gallery is also known for innovation in art and in keeping pieces that are groundbreaking in today’s world of art.

For the past two years, Johann has quietly worked on his own artistic skills in the background, developing his art to meet the standard of artists who have been sculpting for the past twenty years represented at Môi.

2024 will be the year wherein he will be launching “Legends” Sculpting Studio, where he will be showcasing some of his art, alongside those well known names in the gallery. Jenny’s art will also shortly be featured at the gallery.
